What is a Golf Tee?

A golf tee is an imaginary stand used in golf to support and align a golfer's stationary ball before striking with a club, foot or bat. Often referred to as a putter, a golf tee is designed to help align the foot and avoid turning during the swing. In golf, tees are use widely in golf, from high school and college level play to the professional game. The term "putter" is more commonly used by golfers, in reference to their driver. When a player drives the ball into a hole on the course, he is considered to have struck it with a putter.

Putters are basically longer than drivers and lie closer to the ground, about 4 inches inside of the hole. The most common size for a putter is 14 inches, though some players prefer other sizes. Tees are usually constructed from either wood or composite materials, though plastic tees have become increasingly popular. There are several different brands of golf tees, so it is helpful to know the difference between them.

One major difference between tees is the height of the back of the golf tee. Most tees have a half inch, or in some cases less, distance between the front of the shoe and the back of the shaft of the putter. Most drivers, on the other hand, have much longer backs and the front less than an inch over the shaft of the club. This difference in height allows golfers more mobility, which some golfers favor, especially when playing under temporary restrictions such as an injury or illness.

Another difference between a golf tee and driver is the head size of the golf ball. A driver will usually be one or two inches bigger than the head of the golf tee, while the shaft of a putt is usually two or three inches smaller. When golfers tee off in more difficult conditions, such as from a tight bunker, the heads of the golf balls tend to be smaller than normal, and this is especially true for older golfers who may have lost some of their flexibility.

Another difference between the golf tee and driver is the lie of the land. Drivers are more upright in line with the target hole, while tees are more lie to right or left of the target hole. This can be an issue for new golfers, who tend to aim too far left or too far right of the target hole. For this reason, many good beginners tend to start out with smaller golf tees. As they gain confidence and practice more, eventually switching to a golf tee that is more in line with the lie of the land, they will find that they can control the ball more accurately and hit it closer to the hole with more confidence.

As you probably already know, most golf courses charge a tee time. Most commonly these tee times will be in the evenings after most groups have gone home for the night. This ensures that the only people on the course are those who have paid to play. While this can be an inconvenience, it is a small price to pay for a great game of golf.
